What we’re about
What will we read?
Thought-provoking themes in science fiction and fantasy that parallel our current cultural, technological, and socio-political climate. We think this would be a good way to creatively wrestle with and process the rise of fascism in the world around us.
We will meet virtually once a month to discuss our thoughts about each book. (There is also a discord server for intermittent chatting.) This will be pretty open ended. We hope as time goes on, everyone will feel more and more comfortable sharing honest impressions / likes and dislikes related to storyline, character arcs, and other details.
The overall goal is to
explore the connection between fiction and reality.
Also! This book club will center authors of color. There are a lot of BIPOC science fiction and fantasy writers out there that fly under the radar and we want to focus our reading selection on uncovering them.
For the time being, we are only accepting BIPOC book club members. We want to cultivate a safe space that centers BIPOC voices in both the material we read and the discussions we engage in. We also have an age requirement of 24 and older.
(Some info about us: We’re two late-twenties, black, queer friends who want an accountability-fueled-reason to read more consistently, so we’re making a book club!)
